The imagery on this mug was created using a process called mishima. A drawing is incised into the semi-dry, leather-hard piece, then the lines are filled with colored slip. In this case, the colorant is iron oxide. Slip is a mixture of clay and water that can be used in many different applications.
For this process, the slip is mixed to the consistency of yogurt and brushed into and over the incised lines. When the slip dries some and won't smear, a variety of tools are used to scrape the colored slip away until the surface is smooth. The results are marvelous - crisp lines with wonderful character, color inlaid into the clay form.
